Defining Objectives

I recently had to translate a letter from a homeowner to a loan company from Spanish to English and came across a lot of instances where his tone of voice was reflected in the clients ten page paper. Through the document and with his tone he portrayed how he was ignored by the loan company. It is always a challenge to portray the tone of the paper from one language to another as words cannot just simply be directly translated. Most of the time the tone of a translated paper gets lost in translation as the objective of the translator is to give meaning to the words over carrying out the personality of the writer.

Rhetoric

The last rhetorical writing or speech that I've done would have to be in my speech class. I remember vividly giving a speech on something that hit closer to home, and having a audience so silent that one could hear a pin drop in the room at any point of my presentation. I tried to persuade my audience on how we should slow down near school zones and school buses, by using a personal example.

That personal example was of a little girl who decided to cross the street behind a school bus, she ran directly into my driver side door, as I was passing the school bus. This was probably one of the most traumatizing events in my life and I used this emotional personal example of the little girl to persuade my young audience to slow down, when kids are present. As this could ultimately make the different between the little girl suffering a sprain in her foot in the case of my example or suffering a life threatening injury.

Writing

Writing has never been one of my strong points, but I consider it a necessity to succeed in a business world. As every day operation involve a memo or a simple e-mail it is important to communicate the message through writing. I have taken two college level English courses. I enjoyed my second English class which was mainly about a research paper because I cared about the subject of my research paper. The research paper was about 90 percent of our grade and my research paper was about, Dogs and The Community. Growing up as a child I have always had a minor phobia towards dogs and since I live in a more rural community where people tend to let their dogs roam and create havoc around their neighborhood. I found it interesting to write about this subject because of my personal problem and to explain that we do have a problem and it does need to be addressed. Bad dog owners create hostile communities and unfriendly pedestrian zones. At the end of the twelve page research paper I had learned a lot and the moral of my paper was that one should not blame the wrong end of the leash. There was also several dog incidents reported in the local newspaper where people were being bitten, including innocent children, which triggered me to write a summary of my research paper and mention ways that those accidents could have been prevented. As all dog incidents are preventable with the proper dog training and proper safeguarding. This was probably one my best papers to date and hope to get many more.

I also work in property management company where we have to constantly write letters to tenants informing them on issues with their properties, inspections or events happening with our company. I have some technical writing under my belt, but I hope to acquire more with this class.
